What is Tui Na?

Tui Na is a Chinese massage therapy which helps the body restore its balance physically, energetically, and spiritually. Based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Tui Na translates literally as "push pull". Medical Tui Na is a therapeutic massage treating injury and disease. Acupoints are often incorporated into the treatment to facilitate healing and to prevent further imbalances. The techniques are also excellent for calming the mind and spirit.

Tui Na's roots extend back to 1700 BC in the Shang Dynasty of China. According to historical recordings it was originally used for pediatric disease and adult digestive disorders. It flourished through the centuries until the Qing Dynasty when it was suppressed along with many other parts of Chinese culture. It continued to be used secretly by commoners until it was nationally restored following the Communist Revolution. Today it is taught in every traditional medical college.

In TCM, the body's organs are connected to rivers of energy or Qi called "meridians". A person is in balance when there is a free flow of Qi and Blood in these meridians. Just like a river that is dammed, a blockage in the meridian will result in tipping the body's balance. This may manifest as anything from pain to altered emotions to internal disease. Tui Na massage - like acupuncture, acupressure, Qigong or herbal prescriptions - is a tool used to remove the "dam in the river" and allow the body to regain homeostasis.
