What is yoga?

Yoga cultivates focused awareness to keep our minds here in the present moment.

Originating in India over 5000 years ago, yoga unifies body, mind and spirit.

Research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases.

On a purely physical level, practice of the asanas (postures) increases muscle tone and general vitality. It also rapidly improves circulation, co-ordination and balance. The practice not only promotes flexibility and skeleto-muscular fitness, it also improves the function of the circulatory, nervous and endocrine systems - offering a truly holistic approach to health and well-being.

When practiced consistently, yoga can change the body and its processes. An example of this is the improvement of digestive function through the use of twisting and forward bending poses. Increasingly, medical studies are also showing the therapeutic use of mind/body practices such as yoga in managing pain and certain chronic illnesses. At best, yoga can help prevent dis-ease by strengthening the immune system and by working at the cellular level.
